Pieterse destined for Bafana – Khune

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune believes Reyaad Pieterse will soon challenge him for the Bafana Bafana number one jersey.

Khune admitted that he was sad to see the goalkeeper leaving to join Stuart Baxter at SuperSport United. But Pieterse felt he needed to form part of a club where he would get a fair chance of competing for the number one jersey.

It won’t be any easier at Matsatsantsa with Ronwen Williams firmly entrenched as number one for the past four seasons.

“It’s very sad to see Reyaad leave the club, but we have to move on because he decided to move on,” said Khune of his former number two, who turned down a new deal offer at Naturena.

“He has shown that he is one of the best goalkeepers in the country and he has been rewarded with a call-up to the Cosafa Cup team. He will show his talent and I think he will push Ronwen for that number one spot at SuperSport and he will push for the number one spot in Bafana. I wish him all the best.”

Khune added: “We all know that playing as a goalkeeper is not easy. There’s no coach who wants to chop and change like they do with the infield players. Sometimes you can lose your mind sitting on the bench, but if the other goalkeeper is doing well for the team, then you have to be patient and support him because when you get a chance then you expect the same. I think he will get to SuperSport and work hard.”

Khune, who did not want to comment on the exodus of up to 20 players at Chiefs, said Pieterse will continue to grow under the guidance of Baxter.

“Working with Baxter will help his game. He was signed under Baxter and he performed well in the games he played, so it will bring back his confidence. He knows what the coach expects from him and he will deliver for the team.”khune
