Kaizer Chiefs former assistant coach Doctor Khumalo will be Steve Komphela’s boss next season.
Sunday World can exclusively reveal that Amakhosi chairman Kaizer Motaung has offered Khumalo the technical director post.
This move is aimed at paving the way for Komphela to bring in his former assistant at Maritzburg United, Mandla Ncikazi, to Naturena as part of the team’s battle plan for the coming season.
Khumalo declined to comment and referred us to team spokesman, Vina Maphosa.
“I don’t want to sound rude to you, but to be honest what you are saying is news to me. But speak to Vina Maphosa about any other issue that has to do with the club,” he said.
Maphosa declined to comment.
Two senior club players, who are privy to the club’s battle plan for the next season, confirmed that Khumalo was offered the technical director post, and had accepted it.
“We expected the chairman to announce his new role at the club’s awards, but he chose not to (do so) for some reason. He is a smart man. He wanted to keep us guessing,” said the senior player.
Another senior footie said Khumalo had turned down the head coach job when the club decided to part ways with Stuart Baxter last season.
“Mdogish (Doctor) wanted to give Komphela a chance to prove himself at the team. Apart from that he is still attending coaching lessons to perfect his skills,” said the player.
“He will definitely take over at the right time. He is a principled man who is not greedy. If it had been another person he would have taken the position for the sake of money.”
The player said when Khumalo signs the contract, he would effectively be the head honcho and all the coaches, including Komphela, would report to him.
“All the coaches will report to him and he will be the one telling the coaches what kind of football we play,” said the player.
