ANC NEC member Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was booed‚ jeered and heckled at Inchanga‚ west of Durban‚ by people clad in SACP t-shirts when she arrived to monitor the voting in the volatile ward.

The incident took place at Sqophumlando Secondary School in Ward 4 on Wednesday.

The AU Commission chairperson did not even get out of her white BMW 7-series car and the Presidential Protection Unit police members accompanying her whisked her away to another voting station‚ Michael Gwala Community Hall.

But Dlamini-Zuma played the incident down‚ saying the atmosphere in Inchanga was “vibrant”.

“I must say that people should be allowed to vote for whoever they want and be able to choose their candidates without any problems‚” she said.

“What is important though is that things are going smooth even with longer and slower queues‚ but the competition is good‚” said Dlamini-Zuma.

Accompanied by the outgoing councillor and REC member Boy Shozi‚ Dlamini-Zuma said she had monitored six voting districts in both eThekwini and KwaDukuza.
