Kaizer Chiefs have handed the captain’s armband to goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune ahead of the 2016/17 Absa Premiership season.

The shot-stopper takes over from Siphiwe Tshabalala following rampant speculation that he was set to forgo the captain’s duties.

Many touted Willard Katsande as a potential contender for the Chiefs captaincy but the club have settled on Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Khune.

The Glamour Boys made the announcement via their Twitter page: “Khune will lead the Amakhosi as the Team Captain going into the new season.”

Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho

Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after tearing a ligament in his ankle at the Rio Olympics.

Mathoho, who is likely to be out for over a month, sustained the knock in South Africa’s 1-0 loss to Denmark in Brasilia on August 8.

Chiefs announced on Twitter: ‘Injury Update: Erick ‘Tower’ Mathoho tore a ligament in his ankle while playing for South Africa’s Under-23s against Denmark.’

Amakhosi coach Steve Komphela has Daniel Cardoso, Lorenzo Gordinho, Ramahlwe Mphahlele and the transfer-listed Siyanda Xulu as his remaining options in central defence.

The Glamour Boys have also handed a trial to Zimbabwean defender Teenage Hadebe.
