The “holiday” Muhsin Ertugral enjoyed at Mpumalanga Black Aces is over now that the coach has embarked on the serious business of managing Orlando Pirates‚ says Bucs’ chairman Irvin Khoza.

The Pirates and Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman said Ertugral will be under no illusions as to the demands and challenges he faces as the new coach of the Buccaneers.

Ertugral steered Aces to their best finish of fourth place in the PSL last campaign‚ with the club’s franchise being sold to Cape Town City in the off-season.

He has replaced Eric Tinkler at Bucs‚ whose contract was not renewed at the end of the past season after Bucs finished without a trophy.

“At Pirates there are other stakeholders to take into consideration‚ such as the supporters and the sponsors‚” Khoza said.

“Because Orlando Pirates is one of the pillars of football in this country. So therefore we play a certain role in this country‚ which we are always conscious about.

“So whenever we refresh the team‚ we refresh with the understanding of trying to communicate with those stakeholders.

“And we’ve got very fastidious stakeholders. That’s why we up the game‚ and the coach understands that.

“So he understands what it means to be inside [Pirates]‚ and the magnitude of it.

“Where he comes from it was easy for him. When he was at Aces it was a bit of a holiday for him. Now it’s not a holiday.

“It’s not easy if you don’t have the mental strength to cope with the challenge at Pirates.”

Khoza said Ertugral has been given a performance mandate at Bucs.

“He’s got a mandate‚ it’s how he’s going to improve the history of Orlando Pirates‚” Pirates’ chairman said.

“Because‚ let me say this‚ we never had silverware last year‚ but we reached the final of the Caf Confederation Cup.

“That’s history. And we beat all the top teams in Africa. That’s history. That’s a talking point.

“It’s all about silverware of course. But history is the moment that defines the era and creates a discussion.”

Khoza was speaking after the launch in Sandton on Wednesday of this year’s MTN8 cup competition.

The PSL chairman announced that cellphone provider MTN have renewed their sponsorship of the competition for five years.

“I’m excited to announce that MTN have decided to reinforce their confidence in the Premier Soccer League‚ confidence in the players‚ confidence in the club chairmen‚ who make it possible for us to provide a competition of great excitement.

“They have decided to renew their sponsorship of the competition for the next five years.”

Pirates‚ last year’s seventh-placed PSL finishers‚ meet runners-up Bidvest Wits in a tasty quarterfinal of the season’s first cup competition at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday‚ August 27.

On Friday‚ August 26‚ Kaizer Chiefs meet John Comitis’s new Cape Town City at Cape Town Stadium.

Platinum Stars face Chippa United in Rustenburg on August 27‚ and Mamelodi Sundowns are up against SuperSport United at Loftus Versfeld in the Tshwane derby on Sunday‚ August 28.
