Steven Pienaar has put pen to paper on a one-year deal with English Premier League outfit, Sunderland, despite speculation about a potential return to the PSL.

The 34-year-old left EPL club Everton after his contract came to an end on June, 30, and the next step in the player’s career was the subject of much speculation, both locally and abroad.

The Siya crew broke the news of both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates’ interest in bringing the player back to his home country.

It was then reported that the Buccaneers were leading the race for the player’s signature, with the club’s chairman Irvin Khoza keen to open the chequebook for the player’s services.

Pienaar indicated that he would be open to a move to the PSL, and Pirates would be top of the lot for the player, as he grew up being a fan of the Bucs.

However, despite the speculation reaching a climax, it was then revealed that the midfielder left Mzansi and headed back to Europe, as he was in no rush to make a decision on the next step in his professional career.
