Chiefs Could Have Refused To Let Tower Go

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender, Fabian McCarthy, believes that Amakhosi could have prevented Erick Mathoho’s injury.

Mathoho picked up what now has been confirmed to be a ligament injury in South Africa’s group stage match against Denmark at the Olympic Gamesin Rio, and McCarthy defender believes that the injury could have been avoided if the Glamour Boys refused to release him to Owen Da Gama’s squad.

“Obviously Chiefs aren’t happy with the situation, because Mathoho is their star defender,” he told Soccer Laduma. “But then again, they could have refused for him to go to the Olympics as an overage player. So it’s a mistake from both parties and it’s between them in terms of sorting it out.”

The 39-year-old went on to say that Mathoho is now going to have to take the matter into his own hands and ensure that he can come back from the injury without any problems.

“It’s also up to the player to see how he reacts to it and if he recovers well and gets his mind ready when he comes back,” he continued. “He’s in a situation now where nobody can do anything and he just has to get through it, recover well and get back into the team. Whoever comes in there now can take his position, because remember, you’re losing form as well.”
