Former Orlando Pirates striker Benni McCarthy is set to return to South Africa to become the new assistant coach at the club.
McCarthy, who played for Pirates for two seasons, is currently the assistant coach of Belgian Premier League club Sint-Truidense.
A source close to Pirates’ management told Phakaaathi that current incumbent Eric Tinkler’s days at the Buccaneers are nearing the end, with a big-name coach having already agreed to take over the reins next season.
The “international” coach, believed to be Hristo Stoichkov, is set to land in the country soon and will be monitoring Pirates in their last few games before he takes over at the start of next season.
“I don’t know his name myself, but I think he has worked in the country before and I think Benni (McCarthy) will be his assistant while (Tebogo) Moloi will be promoted to head up the MultiChoice team,” said the source.
Another big name coach that has been linked with the Pirates job is former TP Mazembe coach Patrice Carteron.
Carteron left Mazembe in January after winning the 2015 Caf Champions League.
