With Bafana set to begin their quest to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, after a failure to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations under Shakes Mashaba, Khumalo would like to see improved planning from the South African side.

The former midfield genius took time to address the issue of deteriorating national team performances and other interesting football topics on his column in Soccer Laduma newspaper this week.

20 years ago we were the African champions, but now we struggle to even qualify? With the failure to qualify for Gabon, have we got a succession plan in place already, considering the World Cup qualifiers are starting next month? South Africa is probably the only country where you hardly hear of any coaching seminars where we evaluate our performances at these tournaments. We don’t do any post-mortem with other coaches… and you wonder why we are not growing. These workshops aren’t about attacking the head coach or technical team. No, they are more about getting to understand the plan and what the team tried to achieve in the tournament as well as the way forward. All the other coaches can share their views and a lot can be learned from these meetings. If you check, all the World Cup-winning coaches address their colleagues in the country after the event, so what stops us from doing the same? I’m telling you, these meetings would go a very long way in restoring our integrity as well as improving communication between national team coaches and their club counterparts. At the end of the day, we are in this together and there should be an open, direct line between our national team head coaches and their colleagues. We have to get things right in order for us to move forward! If you look at the PSL, it is unbelievable because the standard of the game has really grown. It comes as no surprise to see some of our teams holding their own against top African giants in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.
