However, Chiefs broke the deadlock after 19 minutes, as Lorenzo Gordinho rose well to head home a corner from the left.
Steve Komphela’s charges started seeing more of the ball after taking the lead, with George Maluleka and Mitchell Katsvairo pulling the strings in the middle of the park.
Maritzburg, meanwhile, will feel unlucky not to have gone into the break with a goal, after Bevan Fransman’s header was questionably ruled out.

Maritzburg started seeing more of the ball in the second and Komphela responded by introducing Daniel Cardoso for George Lebese after 60 minutes.
With Chiefs comfortably leading, Komphela introduced Siphiwe Tshabalala for Maluleka, as the club captain continues to regain full fitness.
Itumeleng Khune had a relatively quiet evening, but came to Chiefs’ rescue in the 81st minute, as he produced a fine save to keep out Fransman’s glancing header.
Nonetheless, Chiefs managed to see out the rest of the half with relative ease to claim their second victory of the season.
