EFF and ANC councillors clash in Ekurhuleni
The scuffle was caused by a bid from opposition parties to remove mayor Mzwandile Masina.
Economic Freedom Fighters clashed with “ANC” councillors in the Ekurhuleni council chambers on Thursday.
Violence broke out after a failed bid by the DA to remove mayor Mzwandile Masina.
In a video, ANC councillors can be seen pushing and pulling EFF councillors, who further empty water bottles on ANC councillors.
Councillors can be heard shouting “shaya” as the two parties clash.
EFF Ekurhuleni chairperson Mampuru Mampuru reportedly said that ANC councillors approached the party’s members after they started singing on the council floor.
The Speaker was trying to push through a vote to keep the Masina in his position, when ANC councillors allegedly charged at the EFF, Mampuru told News24.
However, Ekurhuleni ANC spokesperson Thabang Mashiyane blamed the clashes on EFF councillors who he accused of disrupting the voting process.
Official had started counting the votes when EFF councillors allegedly approached them, trying to take books and pens from them.
In a statement on Saturday, the Ekurhuleni ANC called the motion to remove Masina ” a disgusting, weak attempt” by the DA, EFF and Cope to remove Masina.
