Modise to leave Sundowns before retiring

Teko Modise has confirmed that he will be leaving Aba Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the current season before retiring from the game in two years.

Modise is widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted midfielders of the modern PSL era and served Supersport United, Orlando Pirates and the Brazilians with distinction, racking up 251 appearances over the past 11 seasons.

However, the 51-time capped South Africa international has found first-team opportunities limited under Pitso Mosimane over the past two campaigns and has subsequently decided to seek a new challenge elsewhere at the ripe old age of 34.

“My contract with Sundowns expires this season, and to be fair, I have served them with flying colours and have won many things, but I’m looking for a new challenge,” he told SunSport.

He added that he will bow out of the game in a couple of years, in a new environment, for a different team.

“I will retire from football in two seasons to focus on my business. Football has taken so much of my time, but I hope I won’t be lost in the game because I want to plough back to the community through the sport.”

Despite winning two Premiership titles, the Nedbank Cup, Telkom Knockm Out, the CAF Champions League and Super Cup during his six year stint at Masandawana – the veteran midfielder says he’s keen to get more minutes before he hangs up his boots.

“I still have the passion for football and I want more game-time.

“It’s time to move on and retire somewhere in a completely new environment. Sundowns will understand as well, it’s nothing personal. I’m expensive but happy to take a pay cut.”
