Dr Khumalo : I can also tell you that I never asked for the head coach job

Dr Khumalo, who has a UEFA B licence, was demoted as Amakhosi assistant coach, a position he held for four seasons

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has dismissed reports stating that he had a misunderstanding with the club’s head coach Steve Komphela hence he was removed as his assistant coach.

Ghanaian legend John Pantsil was announced as the new Chiefs assistant coach at a press conference . The club also said Khumalo would be redeployed.

According to a source on The Star who asked to remain anonymous Khumalo and Komphela were not getting along, and ultimately, the management of the club decided to appoint a new assistant coach.

Another source also revealed that Khumalo was keen to replace previous Chiefs trainer Stuart Baxter as the head coach, but instead Komphela was offered the job.

“There is no such thing as me and Steve fighting,” Khumalo said on The Star.

“I understand why people would think Steve and I didn’t get along because this thing has been out there even before he arrived at Chiefs.

“But I can tell you that the plan was to always have me working with the youth, especially after Baxter left. The club didn’t want both of us to disappear because we had been around when discussions about a youth academy started.

“It was agreed that I would work with Steve for one season and then move on. This is a surprise to a lot of people, but not to me. I can also tell you that I never asked for the head coach job.”
