Kaizer Chiefs head coach Steve Komphela is under pressure, with a faction of Amakhosi fans calling for the mentor’s exit.
On Wednesday night, following Chiefs’ 2-1 loss to SuperSport United at the FNB Stadium, a number of fans launched missiles towards Komphela as a chorus of “Steve must go” echoed through the stadium.
It was subsequently reported that Chiefs management are set to discuss Komphela’s future at the club, with the Amakhosi hierarchy believed to be divided on whether or not they should reshuffle the bench so early in the 2017/18 campaign. According to Siya sources, some of the club’s senior figures believe it’s time for a change, while others want to give Komphela more time.
According to the source, several names have already been bandied around at Naturena should Komphela and Chiefs opt to part ways – Roger De Sa, Ruud Krol, Muhsin Ertugral and Manqoba Mngqithi have been mentioned, although there has been no official word as yet.
Komphela is in the third and final year of his contract with Chiefs, and after a disappointing two campaigns previously – by Amakhosi’s standards, with the team having failed to lift any silverware – questions are being asked as to whether or not Komphela will see out his full term.
De Sa, Krol and Ertugral are all currently unattached, which means the club will be able to approach them, but Mngqithi is a key member of Mamelodi Sundowns’ technical team, and it seems unlikely that Pitso Mosimane would be willing to lose his number two.
“Jingles” has already lost Rhulani Mokwena to Orlando Pirates, and will be adamant that his technical team is not depleted further.
From Chiefs’ perspective, Komphela is still the head coach, and until the club decides otherwise, he will continue to command his bench.
