One of the more sought-after signatures in the PSL is that of soon-to-be out of contract Mamelodi Sundowns forward, Khama Billiat and, according to reports, Egyptian giants, Zamalek have entered the race for his services with a hefty offer.
The Zimbabwean international’s contract with the eight-time league champions expires in June, which has seen several big clubs in and outside South Africa clamour for him to sign on the dotted line, including the two Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
However, reports from Egypt suggest that Zamalek are in the process of luring the 27-year-old with a salary of more than R6 million per year, which would make him the highest paid player on the continent.
It’s said that Billiat has been in the sights of the Egyptian outfit, along with Ivorian, Giza.
“Zamalek is negotiating more than one player in the recent period and most notable Hamid Ahad, Khama Billiat and Ivorian Giza, in addition to players from Latin America,” reported Zamalek TV.
Will Khama Billiat stay at Sundowns?
However, with the more than likely departure of teammate, Percy Tau from Chloorkop, the Brazilians could be forced to pull out all the stops in retaining Billiat, who has been one of their star players in recent seasons.
According to Goal, Sundowns are set to deal the Zimbabwean’s suitors a big blow by hanging on to him, should Tau’s possible move to Europe become a reality.
In December, coach Pitso Mosimane was confident that Billiat would renew his contract with the Pretoria outfit.
“I think Khama will renew in my belief because he knows that we need him and he knows that we love him,” he said.
Billiat enjoyed limited game time with the league champions in the recently-concluded season – making 21 appearances in all competition – but was involved in 17 goals as he scored nine and registered eight assists.

Reports in Romania suggest that Steaua Bucuresti have joined the race for Khama Billiat’s signature.
According to Digi Sport, coach Nicolae Dica has asked to bring a top attacking midfielder to create a competition for Harlem Gnohere, and the Romanian giants are targeting Billiat for that role.
It is reported that Billiat’s salary demands, though, could hamper the deal.
The Zimbabwean international reportedly wants a salary of at least €500 000 (about R8 000 061) a year, but Bucuresti may not be able to meet his demands.
Bucuresti becomes the latest club to be linked with after Zamalek (Egypt), Qarabag (Azerbaijan), Djurgardens (Sweden), Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits were also said to be interested in his services.
