Secrets Revealed Why Orlando Pirates Didn’t Sign Billiat
Orlando Pirates’ assistant coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed why the club did not sign Khama Billiat before he signed with Kaizer Chiefs on his way to parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns at the expiry of his contract at the end of June.
Billiat is one of the players who has set the PSL scene alight in the 2018/19 season, as he has been creating and scoring goals for Amakhosi.
However, there have been doubts about the Zimbabwean forward’s availability for the Soweto Derby against Pirates, after he missed Amakhosi’s Telkom Knockout match against Black Leopards at the weekend due to injury.
At the end of last season, as Billiat was nearing the end of his contract with Sundowns and Pirates was one of the clubs strongly linked with the player, as a number of PSL sides were making additions to their respective squads.
Mokwena has now officially confirmed how close the Buccaneers were to landing the Zimbabwean, who is arguably the best player in Mzansi’s top-flight at the moment.
Secretes Revealed Why Orlando Pirates Didn’t Sign Billiat
Speaking to the media during the Soweto Derby build-up press conference this week, Mokwena confirmed his involvement in the attempts to sign the player for Pirates. According to Mokwena, Bucs did not lose out on signing Billiat, but they opted against signing the 28-year-old after considering some of the things.
“I still have a very good relationship with Khama. I speak (to him). I know that you guys (the media) know that we (Pirates) tried to sign Khama. We decided in the last minute not to sign Khama. We had lost of talks with Khama – myself and Khama. We were very close to bringing Khama to the black and white. We were very close. But we decided on protecting the change room more than anything else, because the ratio between the expense, and when I say expense I’m not only talking about the salary, because I’ve heard a lot of talk about that, but the expense with regards to injuries, with regards to even certain other factors, and the profit that we would get we thought that it did not make sense,” Mokwena told the media.
Chiefs would be expected to provide an update on Billiat, before Saturday night’s match with their perennial rivals.
“So, it’s not that Pirates lost out on the race to sign Khama. Pirates did not lose out on the race to sign Khama. Pirates decided not to sign Khama,” added Mokwena.
