Questions have been asked about Bongani Zungu’s availability for Bafana Bafana’s African Cup of Nations quarterfinal with Nigeria after he picked up his second booking…
Zungu played a starring role for Bafana as they saw off the hosts, Egypt, in Cairo last night, helping create the winning goal that was eventually finished off by Thembinkosi Lorch.
‘Ben 10’ was given a yellow card towards the end of the game – his second of the AFCON so far – but, unlike Themba Zwane ahead of yesterday’s match, will not face a suspension.
The tournament rules state, “At the end of the first phase of the final tournament (group matches), all cautions received shall be cancelled for the rest of the competition. Nevertheless, a player having collected two yellow cards will sustain the one match suspension.”
This means that Zungu’s yellow from the Morocco game was nullified when the group stages came to an end, however he will face a one-game ban if he is booked against Nigeria and Bafana beat them to qualify for the semifinals – Thulani Hlatshwayo and Sifiso Hlanti find themselves in the same boat.
