Deadly Clashes in the West Bank: Palestinian Killed in Confrontation with PA Security Forces
In a tragic incident in the occupied West Bank, a Palestinian lost his life during an armed confrontation with Palestinian Authority (PA) security services, according to local reports.
The incident occurred in the Tulkarem refugee camp, where tensions escalated leading to a fatal outcome. Ramzi al-Ardah was fatally shot as clashes erupted between the security services and armed fighters within the camp. The confrontations were triggered by attempts by young men to prevent the security services from dismantling barricades that armed fighters had erected earlier to obstruct repeated Israeli raids on the camp.
In the midst of this turmoil, Ramzi al-Ardah’s father, Fakhri al-Ardah, suffered from suffocation due to tear gas canisters fired by the security services, as per sources.
The Tulkarem Brigade, an armed group, issued a statement denouncing the PA forces’ use of live ammunition against camp residents. The Brigade expressed outrage at the removal of barricades intended to block the movement of Israeli occupation forces, vowing not to stay silent regarding this act that appeared to assist the occupation. They condemned what they termed a “bloody violation.”
Talal Dweikat, a spokesperson for the Palestinian security services, provided an alternative account of the events. Dweikat stated that armed individuals had opened fire in front of a government building, prompting the intervention of the security services to restore order. He explained that the security services responded to citizens’ complaints about barriers obstructing schools, municipal buildings, and roads within the refugee camp.
During the ensuing exchange of gunfire, a man lost his life. Dweikat did not specify responsibility for the fatal shots.
In a separate incident on the same day, an unidentified Palestinian man was seriously wounded when Israeli soldiers allegedly shot him following an alleged car-ramming attempt at a checkpoint in the southern occupied West Bank. Israeli forces claimed they fired at a Palestinian-owned vehicle that had accelerated toward an army post near the illegal settlement of Hagai in Hebron. The injured Palestinian was transported to the Israeli Soroka Hospital in Bir Sabe’.
In response to the incident, Israeli forces declared the area a closed military zone, sealed off the entrance to the Fawwar refugee camp in Hebron, and bolstered their military presence. Photographs from the scene depicted the vehicle, which had collided with a concrete block at the army post, riddled with bullet holes.
The occupied West Bank has witnessed a surge in violence due to near-nightly raids by Israeli forces on Palestinian areas and an increase in attacks by Israeli settlers. This escalation has resulted in a rise in Palestinian shooting attacks against Israelis. According to the United Nations, 2023 has seen more than 200 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces, marking it as the deadliest year since the organization began documenting Palestinian deaths in 2006. The situation remains highly volatile and continues to draw international concern.
