Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu advocates for the expulsion of Eritrean refugee protesters.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for the immediate deportation of Eritrean refugees and migrants involved in a violent clash in Tel Aviv. He has also instructed ministers to devise plans for the removal of all other illegal infiltrators in the country.

These statements were made following violent protests between rival groups of Eritreans in south Tel Aviv that left dozens of people injured. Netanyahu expressed the need for strong measures against the rioters, including the immediate deportation of those who participated in the clashes during a special ministerial meeting convened to address the aftermath of the violence.

Netanyahu asked the ministers to provide him with plans for the removal of all other illegal infiltrators, mentioning that some previous measures aimed at encouraging refugees to leave had been struck down by the Supreme Court. It’s important to note that under international law, Israel cannot forcibly return migrants to a country where their life or liberty is at risk.

Prior to an official visit to Cyprus, Netanyahu revealed that the ministerial team was working to deport 1,000 supporters of the Eritrean government involved in the recent violence. He emphasized that they had no claim to refugee status and suggested that if they support the regime, they should return to their country of origin.

Approximately 25,000 African migrants reside in Israel, mainly from Sudan and Eritrea, citing conflict or repression as their reasons for fleeing. Israel acknowledges very few of them as asylum seekers, primarily considering them economic migrants and asserting no legal obligation to provide them refuge.

Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the site of the unrest and called for lawbreakers to be detained until they are deported. He expressed the opinion that they should not be in the country.

Al Jazeera’s Paul Brennan reported that politicians from both sides of the parliament have expressed their views on the matter. The far-right coalition in Netanyahu’s government demanded the deportation of instigators and ringleaders, while opposition members of the Knesset criticized successive governments for failing to address the situation.

Brennan noted that politics is involved in this issue, with Netanyahu aiming to demonstrate action on the matter. The clashes on Saturday involved Eritrean individuals who both supported and opposed the Eritrean government, resulting in property damage and confrontations with Israeli police.

Israeli authorities have attempted various tactics to encourage migrants to leave, such as sending some to remote prisons, withholding part of their wages until they agree to depart the country, or offering cash incentives to those willing to relocate to other countries in Africa. Critics have accused the government of coercing migrants to leave through these measures.
