FIFA Suspends Spanish Football Chief Luis Rubiales Amidst Kissing Controversy

FIFA has imposed a 90-day suspension on the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President, Luis Rubiales, following allegations of a “non-consensual” kiss with star player Jenni Hermoso after Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup. This incident has sparked a heated controversy, resulting in significant repercussions for the sport’s governing body.

Rubiales is now under provisional suspension, barring him from engaging in any football-related activities at both national and international levels. FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has also issued instructions for Rubiales and all RFEF officials and staff to avoid any direct or third-party contact with Hermoso while their investigation remains ongoing.

“FIFA reiterates its absolute commitment to respect the integrity of all persons and therefore condemns with the utmost vigor any behavior to the contrary,” stated the football governing body, emphasizing its dedication to maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment within the sport.

The incident in question transpired on the winner’s podium following Spain’s triumph over England in the Women’s World Cup on August 20. Rubiales, who was also captured on camera displaying inappropriate behavior, embraced Hermoso and kissed her on the lips during the celebration. This act was strongly condemned by Hermoso, who described it as “sexist, impulsive, out of place, and non-consensual.” She expressed feeling vulnerable and claimed to be a victim of assault.

In response to Hermoso’s allegations, the Spanish women’s national team has declared its refusal to participate in further matches until Rubiales and other federation leaders resign.

In a retaliatory move, the RFEF has threatened legal action against Hermoso and intends to present evidence countering the accusations. Rubiales, refusing to resign, argued that he had received permission from Hermoso for the kiss, referring to it as “a little peck.” He also claimed to be the target of “false feminists” engaging in “social murder.”

The Spanish government’s sports council has also weighed in on the matter, announcing its intention to suspend Rubiales while his case is reviewed by a court of arbitration. Depending on the court’s findings, which may include violations of Spanish sports regulations related to “dignity and decorum” and “abuses of authority,” Rubiales could face a suspension ranging from two to 15 years.
