Iran Says Hormuz Shipping Route Deal Reached With Oman as Talks Enter Final Stage

TEHRAN — Iran says it has reached an agreement with Oman on a proposed shipping route through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, following weeks of technical negotiations aimed at improving the safety and predictability of maritime traffic.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the negotiations had made significant progress despite what he described as opposition from the United States.

“Despite US obstruction, the talks have made positive progress over the past three weeks and an agreement has been reached on the shipping route map.”

However, the agreement is not yet fully finalised.

According to Baghaei, Tehran and Muscat are continuing discussions over several outstanding issues, including the wording of a joint statement that the two countries are expected to issue once the process is complete.

Baghaei stressed that the arrangement is a bilateral agreement between Iran and Oman, designed to facilitate the safe movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz while respecting the sovereignty of both countries.

The development comes after earlier discussions between Tehran and Muscat produced broad agreement over the coordinates of a potential shipping route through the waterway.

Iranian officials have previously said that negotiations over the route began several months ago, following the signing of a June 18 memorandum of understanding focused on establishing safer navigation routes.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime passages, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea.
