Harvey Elliott undergoes successful ankle surgery.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp left in a shock

Liverpool boss said: “This group can be exciting from the first second to the last second, I can’t see any kind of early decisions made in this group and that keeps us on our toes.

“In between these games, we have a very important competition as well playing Premier League, League Cup and then hopefully FA Cup later on in the season, but it’s the thing we wanted. It’s exactly what we wanted.

“Now we are here, we play Milan here, Porto and then Atletico, unbelievable stadiums as well, great crowds, all that kind of stuff, passionate fanbase. It’s exactly how you want football. That’s what we got and now we have to deal with it.”

Club doctor, Dr Jim Moxon – who, along with first-team physiotherapist Chris Morgan, was first on the pitch to treat the midfielder – explained: “Harvey sustained a fracture dislocation of his left ankle during the game.

“We were able to reduce the dislocation immediately on the pitch and Harvey had surgery today to repair the fracture and ligaments damaged in the incident. The operation was a success so his comeback starts now.

“We won’t put pressure on him by setting a specific timeframe beyond being able to say with confidence we expect him to feature again later in the season following our rehab programme.”

Klopp told his post-match press conference: “First and foremost, it’s one of the few Instagram posts I love because if he sends that already then it shows he has not that much pain anymore, that’s great news.

“I think we all saw it, the ankle was not in the right place anymore. The medical department put it in the right place again, which is very important really in this moment that it goes quick. Apart from that, there is not a lot of good things to say about it.

“Obviously it’s a bad injury and we have to wait now for further examinations, assessments or whatever, scans, and that’s what we do.”

“Zlatan would have liked to join the match, of course. After the match [versus Lazio] he had some inflammation,” explained Milan coach Stefano Pioli on Tuesday.

“We hoped he could in any case play but he still had pain, so we don’t want to risk [him] tomorrow. It’s a very important match but we have so many matches.

“But we are very well prepared, we have [Ante] Rebic and Olivier [Giroud] – we will decide who will start and who will then join afterwards. Of course we’re very sorry for Zlatan because he always wants to play. He’ll be back soon.”
