Manchester City Secures Jeremy Doku from Rennes in a £55.4 Million Transfer
Jeremy Doku, the 21-year-old Belgian winger, has officially joined Manchester City in a high-profile £55.4 million transfer deal from Rennes. The agreement includes a five-year contract with the talented young player.
During his time in Ligue 1, Jeremy Doku showcased his skills, scoring 10 goals in 75 appearances across three seasons. He will be donning the prestigious number 11 shirt for his new club.
“This is an extraordinary moment for me, both personally and professionally. Manchester City stands as the pinnacle of world football, so this move holds immense significance,” expressed Doku.
Doku marks Pep Guardiola’s third summer signing for the club. Previously, Mateo Kovacic arrived for £25 million from Chelsea, and the former RB Leipzig defender, Josko Gvardiol, joined the ranks for £77 million.
Several top-tier clubs, including West Ham, Tottenham, and Chelsea, had expressed interest in securing Doku’s services, given his impressive performance of seven goals in 35 games last season.
Jeremy Doku had two years remaining on his initial five-year contract with Rennes, which they had signed for 26 million euros (£22.3 million) in October 2020, soon after his debut for the Belgian national team.
Doku emphasized that the prospect of working under the guidance of City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, played a pivotal role in his decision to join the Premier League champions.
“As a young player, I recognize there is much room for growth and improvement in my game,” stated the winger, originally from Antwerp. “Collaborating with Pep and his coaching staff, as well as playing alongside these world-class athletes, will undoubtedly elevate my skills. I have every confidence in that.”
He added, “Watching Manchester City’s performance last season was truly remarkable. Achieving the Treble is the pinnacle of football success, and they accomplished it. I can’t express how thrilled I am to become a part of this team. I can hardly wait to get started, and I hope to bring joy to the fans.”
Txiki Begiristain, City’s Director of Football, expressed his belief in Jeremy Doku’s potential to become a “world-class” attacking player under Guardiola’s tutelage.
Begiristain commented, “Jeremy is an incredibly promising young talent, and we are delighted to have him on board. His natural attributes, including exceptional speed and one-on-one skills, make him a perfect fit for our squad. Working with Pep and our technical staff will undoubtedly help him evolve into a world-class attacking sensation.”
