When Pitso Mosimane left Mamelodi Sundowns, the team knew that they had to bring in Komphela of which they did. Komphela also coached Kaizer Chiefs before he went to Bloemfontein Celtic, this shows how good he is.
“Unless something big happens, it seems the two [Ncikazi and Komphela] will get the chance of working together again [at Pirates],” says the source.
“There is a lot happening behind the scenes and there could be big announcements before the start of the new season.”
“Komphela is actually top of the list and could be a surprise announcement. They like him because he has an eye for young talent and they want to have more players from their development academies graduate to the senior team,” said the source.
Komphela has previously coached at Pirates’ main rivals, Kaizer Chiefs where he stayed for three seasons without winning a trophy, though he did get to two cup finals. He has grown since then, however, and must have learnt a few things at Sundowns this season, where he was a ‘senior’ coach.
“They believe he could be great for them with the squad they have. And he knows all the players well,” said the source
“We haven’t discussed anything about Steve Komphela. Steve Komphela is contracted to Sundowns. About the other coach (Ncikazi), I’m made to believe that there was a misunderstanding (at Arrows) and he left. As far as I know, we still have a coach in Zinnbauer,” Orlando Pirates technical director said.
