However, Bartomeu believes there is no possibility of the club legend leaving the club this summer.

“I have no doubt he (Messi) will want to continue until 2021 and we hope after that another year,” he said.

Messi who has incredibly scored 603 goals in 687 appearances for Barcelona, has extended his contract eight times since 2005.

The Argentina international has previously expressed his desire to return to his native homeland and play for his childhood club Newell’s Old Boys, but it’s understood the prospect of that happening is still at least a couple of years away.

Meanwhile, Bartomeu has confirmed that the LaLiga champions will not make another move for Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar when the transfer window reopens in January.

Barcelona spent all summer trying to broker a deal to bring the Brazilian superstar back to the Nou Camp, after he left for the French capital in a world record £200m deal in 2017.

However, when asked about the prospect of Barca going back in for Neymar in January, Bartomeu replied: “No. Right now, no.”
