Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the Zulu monarch, traditional prime minister, and founder of the IFP, is renowned for having organized more rallies under the banner of “Free Mandela” than any other leader. This remarkable fact, disclosed by his party just one day prior to his 95th birthday, underlines the enduring legacy of his activism. Regrettably, Prince Buthelezi will not be able to mark this milestone with his family at his KwaPhindangene residence in KZN, as he is currently in the hospital.
In a statement issued on Saturday, August 26th, Velenkosini Hlabisa, the president of the IFP, recounted how Prince Buthelezi’s political involvement led to his expulsion from Fort Hare University, a consequence he faced on the counsel of Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda. Undeterred by these setbacks, Buthelezi established Inkatha in 1975, aiming to reignite the liberation struggle within South Africa.
Hlabisa emphasized that Prince Buthelezi’s life has been one of dedicated service, highlighting his continued role as the leader of the IFP caucus in the National Assembly since 1994, a position he holds to this day. Hlabisa praised Buthelezi’s reputation as a voice of reason in parliamentary discussions, capable of bringing composure and perspective to challenging debates.

Buthelezi’s lifelong commitment to South Africa’s liberation struggle began at a young age, and his passion for this cause has been unwavering. Currently in the hospital for the past month, his family anticipates his discharge next week.
The family’s spokesperson, Dr. Bhekuyise Buthelezi, disclosed that Prince Buthelezi has been steadily recovering under the vigilant care of the medical team at the hospital. Dr. Buthelezi conveyed the positive news that the complications he faced have been successfully resolved, and the medical professionals are satisfied with his current health condition.
Although Prince Buthelezi won’t be celebrating his birthday in KwaPhindangene on Sunday, August 27th, his family is heartened by his progress and eagerly looks forward to his return. Notably, Buthelezi holds the distinction of being the oldest member of parliament, a testament to his enduring dedication to public service.
