Tragedy struck Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday when a devastating shooting incident left three black victims dead. According to local law enforcement, the assailant’s actions were driven by racial hatred.
The incident unfolded around 2 pm local time within a Dollar General store. The shooter, outfitted in a tactical vest, wielded both an “AR-style” rifle and a handgun. Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters informed the media that the gunman ultimately took his own life.
Sheriff Waters made a grave declaration, stating, “This shooting was racially motivated, and he hated black people.” He went on to reveal that the suspect had left messages for his parents, the media, and the police.
“It’s abundantly clear that he singled out a specific group of people, namely black individuals, as his intended victims,” Waters emphasized.
While authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the suspect, it has been revealed that he was in his twenties.
The tragic incident occurred in close proximity to Edward Waters University, a historically black institution. In response, the university issued a “stay in place” order for students residing on campus, prioritizing their safety.
Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan expressed her condemnation of the gunman, stating, “One shooting is one too many, but these mass shootings are exceptionally difficult to bear.” She shared these sentiments during an interview with a local television station.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis did not mince words when referring to the shooter, labeling him a “scumbag” who “took the coward’s way out” instead of accepting responsibility for his actions.
This tragic event is a grim reminder of the enduring challenges posed by racially motivated violence in the United States. In 2015, white supremacist Dylann Roof carried out a heinous act, killing nine people inside a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina. Roof was subsequently sentenced to death two years later for his crimes.
