Jordan Henderson ‘deeply affected’ by criticism of Saudi Arabia transfer.

“Jordan Henderson Addresses His Move to Al-Ettifaq Amid Criticism”

English midfielder Jordan Henderson recently spoke about his transfer to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, expressing his feelings of being deeply affected by the criticism surrounding his decision.

Henderson, a well-known advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, made the move from Liverpool to Al-Ettifaq in July, which garnered mixed reactions from various quarters. The criticism primarily stemmed from the fact that same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Saudi Arabia.

In response to the criticism, Henderson shared his perspective in an interview with The Athletic, stating, “My intention was never, ever to hurt anyone. My intention has always been to help causes and communities.”

Henderson emphasized his genuine care for various causes and communities and expressed his hurt over accusations of turning his back on them. He added, “All I can say is that I apologize, I’m sorry that I’ve made them feel that way. But I haven’t changed as a person.”

The 33-year-old midfielder has been an active supporter of LGBTQ+ causes, even penning a heartfelt piece in the Liverpool matchday program in November 2021 in support of Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign.

Henderson’s transfer to Al-Ettifaq also marked a reunion with former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard, who took up the role of manager at Al-Ettifaq in July.

Henderson explained, “I’ve gone above and beyond to help [the LGBTQ+ community]. I’ve worn the laces. I’ve worn the armband. I’ve spoken to people in that community to try to use my profile to help them. That’s all I’ve ever tried to do.”

Addressing the LGBTQ+ fan group Kop Outs’ call for him to “stand by [his] words as a professed ally & champion of #LGBT+ rights,” Henderson acknowledged the importance of actions over words.

Henderson expressed his willingness to continue wearing rainbow laces in Saudi Arabia, in line with his values, while also respecting local customs and culture.

He shed light on his motivations for choosing to play in Saudi Arabia, highlighting his desire to contribute to the growth of the sport in another country and the importance of not merely criticizing from afar without understanding the local context.

Henderson concluded, “I think people know what my views and values were before I left and still do now. And I think having someone with those views and values in Saudi Arabia is only a positive thing.”

Henderson’s transfer to Al-Ettifaq followed his storied career at Liverpool, where he made 492 appearances, won seven major titles, and served as captain. However, he faced reduced playing time in the 2022-23 season and no longer felt secure in his position at the club.

He clarified, “If one of those people [at Liverpool] said to me, ‘Now we want you to stay,’ then we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

While Henderson’s move to Saudi Arabia drew attention for its financial aspects, he vehemently denied that money was the motivation behind his decision.

Since joining Al-Ettifaq, Henderson has made several appearances for the club and continues to represent the England national team. He looks ahead to international fixtures with a focus on maintaining his contributions to both his new club and his country.
