Lukaku Nears Loan Move to Roma as Chelsea’s Out-of-Favor Striker

Chelsea’s striker, Romelu Lukaku, is on the verge of joining Serie A team Roma on a season-long loan. The arrangement includes an £8 million loan fee, and Roma will take care of the wages for the 30-year-old Belgian international.

Inter Milan had initially hoped that Lukaku, who is not included in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans at Chelsea, would return to their club where he spent last season on loan. However, Lukaku’s discontent with coach Simone Inzaghi, who did not start him in the Champions League final, led him in a different direction.

While Juventus was also interested in acquiring Lukaku, they faced challenges in making necessary adjustments to their squad. Though some details are yet to be finalized, the agreement for Lukaku’s return to Italy is essentially complete.

Lukaku’s move to Roma means a reunion with Jose Mourinho, who convinced him to join Manchester United instead of Chelsea when he moved from Everton to Old Trafford in 2017.

After returning to Chelsea from Inter Milan for a £97.5 million transfer fee in August 2021, Lukaku’s second stint at Stamford Bridge has been challenging to establish himself, and he has been training apart from the first team this season.

Lukaku has registered 15 goals in 59 matches for Chelsea across two spells and stands at the 20th spot on the Premier League’s all-time goal-scoring list with 121 goals. Chris Sutton, a former Chelsea striker, remarked on Lukaku’s potential: “When he is conditioned and fit, he is a real handful.” Sutton added, “He has had a brilliant career, but at 30, he has to prove himself again. The situation at Chelsea is somewhat perplexing; he appeared to be sidelined despite Chelsea’s striker crisis, which is a bit puzzling.”
