Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun is inching closer to a potential move to Monaco in a deal valued at around €45 million ($48.5 million), according to insiders at ESPN.

Although the precise terms of the agreement are yet to be finalized, sources suggest that Ligue 1 side Monaco has emerged as the frontrunner to secure the 22-year-old’s signature, despite competition from Inter Milan and Chelsea. Both Inter and Chelsea had balked at Arsenal’s initial asking price of €58.3 million. Arsenal’s willingness to compromise may prompt a reassessment, but it’s been reported that Chelsea has placed a significantly lower valuation on the American international.

Given this substantial disparity in their assessments of the player’s value, Chelsea had not progressed from an initial inquiry to submitting a formal bid as of Friday morning.

Balogun has not featured in Arsenal’s Premier League matchday squads this season and is keen on securing regular first-team action following an impressive loan stint at Reims, where he netted 21 goals in 37 Ligue 1 appearances.

Should the discussed fee be agreed upon, it would surpass the previous record sum Arsenal received for a player—the £35 million from Liverpool for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2017.

Arsenal is actively looking to offload several fringe players, with Kieran Tierney nearing a season-long loan to Real Sociedad. Additionally, Nuno Tavares, Cedric Soares, Nicolas Pépé, and Albert Sambi Lokonga are among those listed as available for transfer before the September 1 deadline.
