Ownership of Fighter Jets Spotted in Sandton During the 15th BRICS Summit.
In the past three days, residents of Sandton and visitors to the area have been witnessing the presence and hearing the sounds of fighter jets as the country hosts the 15th BRICS Summit.
Two fighter jets have been regularly spotted and heard, creating a loud commotion as they fly over the Sandton Convention Centre. Currently, no official authority has provided The Star with a statement or specific information regarding the purpose of these fighter jets making frequent passes over the area.
Notably, there is a significant presence of law enforcement agencies in and around the summit venue, where more than 50 heads of state from across the globe have convened for the summit, set to conclude today.
Morena Mokoena, an employee in one of Sandton City’s retail shops, shared his experience, saying that when he first heard the jet noises, he initially thought it might be an attack due to the unfamiliar sound. “I am aware that there is a BRICS summit taking place just outside my workplace, but the first time I heard the loud and unusual sound, I couldn’t help but think there was some kind of attack. During my lunch break, while outside, I heard the sound again, looked up, and spotted not one, but two fighter jets,” said Mokoena.

Some citizens took to the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their thoughts on the fighter jets. X user Bo Mbinwane wrote, “SANDF drama. Fighter jets flying by every ten minutes!!! Which country’s fighter jets are poised to send missiles to Sandton? Drama. What intelligence product is causing the South African Air Force to react like this? Who is preparing for an air assault in Sandton? Flying Swedish jets is a costly affair!”
Another user, Mags Heystek, remarked, “It’s not every day you see fighter jets flying over Sandton. Oh, wait, this is the third day in a row.”
Some citizens went as far as criticizing the government for what they perceived as a wasteful expenditure on these sophisticated machines; however, it remains unclear whether these jets are owned by South Africa or another country.
“Why are these fighter jets circling the skies over Sandton? What’s the cost of keeping them in the air? All this display surely comes with a hefty price tag,” questioned Bev Thrilla.
If it turns out that these jets belong to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), it would be surprising. Recent reports have indicated that SANDF pilots are grounded due to non-airworthy aircraft, and they have been assigned to administrative duties while the crisis persists.
Efforts to obtain a comment from SANDF spokesperson General Andries Mahapa were made; however, as of the time of publishing, no response had been received.”
