Phil Neville understood that Lionel Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami would likely lead to his departure as coach, irrespective of the team’s on-field performance. Neville’s dismissal occurred on June 1, just two weeks before Lionel Messi’s official signing with the MLS team. His tenure ended with Miami ranking last in the MLS Eastern Conference, having secured only two victories in thirteen matches.
However, the dynamics shifted with Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba joining the team, accompanied by Tata Martino taking over as coach. This transformation was evident as Messi netted nine goals in six games, propelling Miami into the Leagues Cup final against Nashville. This marks Miami’s first final appearance and an opportunity to clinch their first piece of silverware.
Speaking for the first time about his departure on Taylor Twellman’s Offside podcast, Neville shared the challenging conversation he had with his lifelong friend and Miami co-owner, David Beckham, who made the decision to let him go. Neville emphasized that he doesn’t harbor any resentment towards Miami.
“I always had a gut feeling that I wouldn’t be with the club when Messi arrived,” Neville reflected. “This wasn’t about doubting my capabilities, but recognizing the unique circumstances. This wasn’t the same as signing players like Higuain or Matuidi. Looking at Messi’s history at other clubs, specific managers always managed him. Ultimately, the results were lacking during my final month in charge, and I recognized that. It was the reason I departed.”
“Seeing myself in the mirror each morning and hearing comments like ‘it could have been you’ from friends and on social media, I need to clarify that it couldn’t have been. The outcomes on the field were subpar, and I understood the club’s vision. Having been in football for a considerable time, I’ve learned that sometimes things aren’t meant to be. I’m not resentful or angry.”
Neville spoke highly of Beckham’s handling of his departure and the candid conversation they shared on his last day as Miami’s coach. “Their honesty struck me profoundly. There have been two moments in my career, outside of my trophy wins, that stand out—the day I left Manchester United and when I departed Miami. It was a bittersweet moment, one filled with respect and affection between lifelong friends.”
Neville’s approach to life aligns with his mentors’ teachings. “I hold no grudges, and I don’t dwell on the past. As Sir Alex Ferguson and my father taught me, looking back only breeds pain, anger, and resentment. I focus on moving forward. Miami offered my family and me two and a half remarkable years.”
Interestingly, Neville could have been coaching other soccer stars as well, such as Busquets and Alba, who joined Miami. Alba even took Neville’s son Harvey’s jersey number upon arrival, leading to a humorous interaction between them.
Looking ahead, Neville revealed his aspirations to remain in MLS. “The United States has been a remarkable experience for me. I thoroughly enjoyed coaching in the MLS—the football, the styles. While there have been challenges, I’ve gained invaluable experiences. This journey has been one of the most demanding, but the league is extraordinary. I’m determined to prove my worth in MLS and finish what I’ve started.”
