Rugby World Cup 2023: South Africa Implements 14 Alterations for Upcoming Match Against Romania

Defending Champions South Africa Announce Squad Adjustments Ahead of Rugby World Cup Clash with Romania

South Africa, the reigning champions, have made significant changes in their lineup as they prepare to face Romania in a crucial Pool B encounter at the Rugby World Cup.

Cobus Reinach will don the coveted number nine jersey, stepping into the scrum-half role, as the Springboks implement 14 alterations to the lineup that secured victory against Scotland in their title defense opener.

Grant Williams, typically a scrum-half, has been slotted onto the wing for this match, adding a dynamic dimension to their backline.

On the bench, Jaden Hendrikse and Faf de Klerk provide versatile cover, with the ability to shift to fly-half if needed.

Damian Willemse, who transitions from full-back to fly-half, is the sole player maintaining his starting position in the XV.

Head coach Jacques Nienaber explained, “We raised eyebrows when we included four scrum-halves in the squad, but we recognized their skill sets and adaptability, which offer us invaluable backline options essential for managing the challenges of tournament rugby.”

He continued, “We’ve been experimenting with player rotations and positions since last season, resulting in the luxury of having a well-matched group of 33 players in France, all possessing high-quality skills and abilities.”

In a notable development, lock Jean Kleyn makes his fifth appearance for the Springboks, four years after representing Ireland in the previous World Cup. Hooker Bongi Mbonambi assumes the captaincy role from Siya Kolisi.

This match marks only the second encounter between the two teams since South Africa’s triumphant 1995 World Cup victory on home soil.

Romania initiated the scoring in their opening match against Ireland but eventually succumbed to an 82-8 defeat.
