“Ukraine’s SBU Deputy Head Found Deceased, Allegations of Mistreatment in Note”
Colonel Dmitry Bakaev, the deputy head of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) special communications department, has tragically passed away at his workplace in Kiev. According to reports, he was found on August 25 with a gunshot wound to the head, and it is believed he took his own life using his service weapon, a Makarov pistol. Ukrainian media outlet Strana.ua was the first to report this incident, citing sources within the security agency.
A suicide note, addressed to SBU chief Vassily Malyuk, was discovered at the scene. In the note, Colonel Bakaev pointed towards his superiors, alleging systematic mistreatment and the repeated violation of his “human dignity” as the reasons behind his actions. As a result, several SBU officers have already been questioned regarding these allegations, according to the same source.
Later in the day, the SBU itself acknowledged the incident but refrained from officially labeling it as a suicide. Instead, they announced an ongoing investigation into Colonel Bakaev’s death, conducted by the National Police. The SBU expressed sincere condolences to the deceased officer’s family and friends and pledged to offer “maximum assistance” to the investigators handling the case.
