Captain Martin Odegaard’s Penalty Secures Gritty Arsenal Win Against Crystal Palace with 10 Men
Following Gabriel Martinelli’s quick free-kick, Eddie Nketiah was fouled by Sam Johnstone, setting the stage for Odegaard to expertly outfox the goalkeeper with a penalty kick.
During this period, Mikel Arteta’s squad appeared to be in control, but their composure was tested when Takehiro Tomiyasu, operating as a left-back, was shown a red card for accumulating two yellow cards. The initial yellow was a result of excessive time taken for a throw-in, while the second was controversially issued for a minor foul on Jordan Ayew in midfield.
Palace mounted a late offensive, with Tyrick Mitchell narrowly missing the target in injury time. However, the Gunners, who had seen Nketiah hit the post in the first half, fully earned their victory.
Arsenal now shares the same point total as Brighton and Manchester City, each with six points from two games, while Palace failed to build upon their opening-day triumph against Sheffield United.
The talking point of the match was undeniably Tomiyasu’s contentious red card. Arsenal’s full-back situation has been complicated by injuries, with summer signing Jurrien Timber sidelined and Oleksandr Zinchenko recently returning from a calf injury, starting the game on the bench.
Tomiyasu, typically a right-back, was deployed on the left, with Thomas Partey, a midfielder, filling in as a right-back when Palace were in possession and returning to his customary role when Arsenal had the ball. However, Tomiyasu will be unavailable for the next match due to his controversial red card. His first yellow card, for a time-wasting throw-in, was deemed contentious, particularly as it was Kai Havertz who was primarily responsible for the delay before allowing his teammate to take the throw. His second yellow came from a minor foul on Ayew, which occurred far from any dangerous area on the field. Notably, this marked Arsenal’s first Premier League red card since the 2021-22 season.
Despite this setback, Arsenal largely dominated the game, with Nketiah coming close to scoring when he struck the post and then chipped an attempt onto the roof of the net.
While Declan Rice delivered another dependable performance in central midfield following his £100 million transfer from West Ham, Kai Havertz continued to search for his optimal role within the team.
In the dying moments of the match, Palace launched a late surge, creating six of their 14 chances in the final five minutes. Odsonne Edouard saw his attempt saved, and Mitchell fired over the bar after Aaron Ramsdale parried the ball.
