Former Manchester United defender, Gary Neville, minced no words as he declared, “It was evident from the very beginning that he wouldn’t don the Manchester United jersey again.” Speaking candidly on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Neville, a legendary figure with 602 appearances for the club, went on to remark, “The process leading up to this decision has been profoundly distressing. In instances as grave and intricate as this, strong, authoritative leadership is imperative. This should originate from the highest echelons of the club, but, regrettably, Manchester United lacks such leadership.”
Joining the discourse, former England midfielder Karen Carney expressed her discontent with the handling of the matter, describing it as “poorly managed” and labeling it a “deeply unsettling situation.”
Greenwood, an England international, was arrested in January 2022 in connection with allegations surrounding online content. In a statement, Greenwood acknowledged his errors and assumed his “fair share of responsibility,” but vehemently denied the accusations, asserting, “I did not engage in the activities I was accused of.”
Manchester United responded by stating, “Based on the available evidence, we have concluded that the online material in question did not present the complete picture and that Mason did not commit the offenses for which he was initially charged.” They added, “Everyone involved, including Mason, recognizes the challenges associated with his return to professional football at Manchester United.”
The announcement of the investigation’s findings was originally scheduled prior to United’s opening Premier League match against Wolves on August 14. However, the decision was postponed amidst intense debate concerning Greenwood’s potential reintegration into the squad at Old Trafford.
The club declared its intention to seek input from its women’s team, several of whom represented England in the World Cup in Australia, before making a determination regarding Greenwood’s future.
In an open letter to United fans, Chief Executive Richard Arnold explained the club’s limitations in conducting the investigation, noting their reliance on cooperation from third parties to collect evidence and establish context. He stated, “Reintegration was one of the potential outcomes we considered and planned for. Over the past six months, various scenarios were contemplated and planned for, and my perspective evolved as our investigative process unfolded.”
Carney, who chaired a substantial review of women’s football, further criticized Manchester United’s handling of the situation, stating, “I believe Manchester United, as an institution and football club, has handled this situation very poorly. The statements have been confusing and contradictory, involving unnecessary stakeholders, such as female players and the Lionesses.” She emphasized the need for independent handling of such matters.
Greenwood’s potential return prompted a group of female United supporters to stage a protest outside Old Trafford ahead of the Wolves game on August 14. They demanded that the club “demonstrate a zero-tolerance approach” towards violence against women, expressing concern that Greenwood’s reinstatement would convey a message that women’s concerns were being disregarded.
Greenwood remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2025. However, he may now be transferred or loaned to another club for the remainder of his contract. He continues to receive full pay but will not participate in training with Manchester United.
Neville also asserted that Manchester United should not have been tasked with overseeing a situation where they lacked the requisite expertise, advocating for the establishment of an independent panel for such cases. He insisted, “On matters like domestic abuse and violence against women, independence is crucial. Manchester United should not be the sole arbiter in such a significant issue, not just for themselves but also for the entire sport. This isn’t just about Manchester United’s reputation but also that of the Premier League.”
Sports lawyer Chris Farnell commented on the predicament faced by Manchester United, stating, “They would have been criticized regardless of their actions. If they had rushed to a conclusion, they would have been told it wasn’t thorough enough. Because they conducted a thorough investigation, they are now criticized for taking too long. What’s important is the rationale behind Manchester United’s conclusions and the reasons for them.”
