Emmerson Mnangagwa secures his re-election for a second term as Zimbabwe’s president.
Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa secures a second term as the incumbent leader, surpassing the 50% threshold in the official vote count, announced by the country’s electoral commission on Sunday.
According to Priscilla Chigumba, the head of the commission, Mnangagwa garners 52.6% of the votes, while his main rival, opposition leader Nelson Chamisa, trails with 44%, as confirmed by the official results.
ZANU-PF, Mnangagwa’s party, expresses gratitude to its supporters, celebrating the outcome as a “well-deserved victory” for the current president. On the platform formerly known as Twitter, the party vows to maintain its commitment to achieving the goals outlined in Vision 2030, the government’s economic development program.
Chamisa’s Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) rejects the official results, citing alleged voter suppression and significant irregularities. In a statement, the party announces its initiative to conduct an independent audit of the vote tally.
Criticism is directed at the government from both the opposition and international observers due to reported “irregularities” during the voting process. Instances of delayed delivery of paper ballots to numerous polling stations in the capital, Harare, and certain rural areas prompted an extension of the voting period by an extra day. Campaign themes revolved around social issues such as corruption, high unemployment rates, and the country’s political future following the 2017 military coup that ousted Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s leader for almost four decades.
Mnangagwa, who formerly served as vice president under Mugabe, assumed power after the coup and was elected to a full five-year term in 2018, a result disputed by the opposition at that time as well.
