Eskom Temporarily Halts Load-Shedding for Three Hours.

“Eskom Suspends Load-Shedding Due to Weekend Demand, Implements Stage 3 Load-Shedding Later”

Eskom announced a temporary suspension of load-shedding at 12:50 on Saturday, August 26, 2023, citing lower-than-expected weekend electricity demand. However, the power utility stated that Stage 3 load-shedding would be enforced from 16:00 on Saturday until 05:00 on Sunday, August 27.

“The decision to suspend load-shedding at 12:50 this afternoon was a response to reduced weekend demand,” Eskom reported. “Stage 3 load-shedding will resume from 16:00 today until 05:00 on Sunday, followed by Stage 1 load-shedding until 16:00.”

Eskom also indicated that it would issue further updates if there were any significant developments.

The rotation of Stage 1 load-shedding in the mornings and Stage 3 in the evenings has been a consistent practice for some time, with Eskom’s most recent load-shedding suspension spanning just over four hours on Monday, August 21.

Maintenance work on Koeberg’s unit one generator has played a notable role in recent months in the occurrence of load-shedding. This generator has a capacity of approximately 970MW, and its return to service has experienced multiple delays since it was taken offline for the replacement of its steam generators.

Eskom has now confirmed the completion of “the most significant part of the scope” for this maintenance and anticipates it to be commercially operational again on November 3, 2023.
