Crash Details: The Russian Emergencies Ministry has verified that the private jet, an Embraer 135BJ Legacy 600, crashed in the Tver Region while en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Regrettably, all ten individuals aboard, including three crew members and seven passengers, lost their lives in the accident.

Passenger Confirmation: Rosaviatsiya, the Russian federal air transport agency, has confirmed the presence of Prigozhin and several high-ranking Wagner Group commanders on board the ill-fated flight.

Video Footage: Several short video clips capturing the crash have surfaced on social media. These videos depict the aircraft in an uncontrolled descent, leaving behind a trail of black smoke. The extent of damage or fire on the aircraft is not discernible from these clips.

Status of Prigozhin: While Rosaviatsiya acknowledged Prigozhin’s presence on the flight, it has not officially declared his death. As of the latest update on Wednesday evening, Russian officials had recovered eight bodies, none of which had been identified at that time. The victims were described as being severely burned.

Additional Passengers: Apart from Prigozhin, the aircraft carried Dmitry Utkin, a former Russian special forces operator and alleged co-founder of the PMC, as well as Valery Chekalov, who is considered by the US to be the deputy head of Wagner. Other passengers were Sergey Propustin, Evgeny Makaryan, Alexander Totmin, and Nikolay Matuseev, all identified as Wagner associates by Russian news outlets.

Evgeny Prigozhin: A successful entrepreneur in the catering industry and a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prigozhin founded the Wagner Group, a private military company (PMC), in 2014. While the Wagner Group was operational since 2014 and engaged in conflicts in the Donbass region, Prigozhin only acknowledged his involvement with the company in the past year. Wagner troops have been involved in various operations in Africa and Syria, where they reportedly encountered US forces in 2018.

Wagner’s Recent Mutiny: Prigozhin alleged in June that Russian forces had attacked a Wagner field camp, prompting him to threaten a march on Moscow to remove allegedly corrupt military officials. Putin characterized this as a “stab in the back” and vowed decisive action. However, the mutiny was swiftly resolved with the assistance of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Prigozhin subsequently announced the redeployment of mutiny participants to Belarus.

Recent Developments: After a two-month silence, Prigozhin released a video in which he stated that the Wagner Group had resumed recruitment activities and was engaged in “reconnaissance and search activities” against “ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and other bandits” across Africa.
