Pitch Black Afro Released After Serving Three Years for Partner’s Death

Thulani Ngcobo, widely known as Pitch Black Afro, has been released from prison after serving three years for the tragic death of his partner. The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed Ngcobo’s release, citing his eligibility for special sentence remission.

Ngcobo’s legal journey began in June 2020 when he was sentenced to a 10-year term for culpable homicide in the unfortunate demise of his long-term partner, Catherine Modisane, during an altercation. Notably, he was acquitted of the charges of defeating the ends of justice and premeditated murder.

Acting Judge J. Du Plessis, presiding at the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, made the decision to suspend half of Ngcobo’s sentence, contingent upon his conduct and the avoidance of similar offenses.

DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed that Ngcobo’s sentence had reached its conclusion and that there were no specific conditions attached to his release.

“Culpable homicide falls under the offenses eligible for special remission of sentences. Therefore, there are no additional conditions for his release, as his sentence has run its course,” Nxumalo explained.

The tragic incident occurred on December 31, 2018, when Catherine Modisane was discovered deceased at a Johannesburg bed and breakfast, the result of blunt force trauma to the head. During the legal proceedings, prosecutor Matshiliso Moleko relied on circumstantial evidence, contending that Ngcobo had assaulted Modisane while they were together in the room.

Moleko stated, “[Modisane] was found dead on December 31, 2018, and the cause of death was blunt trauma, which could have been caused by the accused hitting his wife’s head against the wall. It was confirmed by the accused that he pushed her, and she hit her head against the wall. His confession was provisionally admitted, and it should now be admitted as evidence.”

Moleko continued, “I will rule out the element of negligence. The accused, in the manner he assaulted Modisane, could have seen that the injuries were severe. Although he could not have had the intention to kill, he had the intention of dolus eventualis.”

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, emphasized the NPA’s respect for the verdict, stating that it would not be appealing either the conviction or the sentence.

Thulani Ngcobo’s release marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in a legal and personal journey marked by tragedy and loss.
